Are you thinking of disposing your old computer? Are seeking how to get rid of the data on your hard drive? Here ae five methods NOT to use for destroying your old hard drive in an environmental safe manner. They are a combination of non-physical and physical destruction methods and we certainly don’t recommend any of them.
Leaving the Matter to Chance
One of the most dangerous ways of destroying a hard dive it to do nothing with it and leave it to chance. Whether as an individual or business, leaving a hard drive within your machine is inviting a disaster. For example, if you take it to an IT recycling company and place it in their containers for recycling, what do you think will happen next? Does the company makes certain no one has access to container previous to it being recycled? Likewise, if you sell your old computer, what happens if your data is still on the drive? Leaving any of your data on the drive is risking someone retrieving that data and personal information like phone numbers, bank details or addresses – and probably using it in a harmful manner.
Setting Fire
Setting fire to a hard drive seems like an easy and simple way of destroying it but it’s not as real and safe as you think. Setting fire to a hard drive would probably reduce it useless but it wouldn’t destroy the hard drive. The circuit board that is outside the drive will melt but the platters inside that holds the data can still be recovered. Toxic fumes are released from the dive when melted. You definitely don’t want to inhale them and the end result would be a mess of the hard drive.
Shooting
Any budding shooter might think a hard drive is a perfect target for practice. YouTube has a lot of videos about people using hard drives as a shooting practice and though it looks good and fun, the process is really dangerous. The platter and drive get pierced by the bullet meaning it won’t spin up but it’s not safe and the right method.
Melting With Chemicals
One of the other risky ways of destroying a hard drive is by fusing and melting the metals and plastics together. For example Thermite, is a pyrotechnic arrangement of metal oxide and metal fuel. When kindled with heat, the response is highly volatile and quick and in some circumstances it is explosive. The drive is totally melted and the data is destroyed but it’s very dangerous and hazardous way of destroying a drive.
Free Software Packages
When you remove any records from this computer, the data can be still recovered if it is overwritten many times. There are several free software bundles on the internet that allow you roe move the data from your hard drive. So packages are legit and allow you to remove all the information from the drive before handing over to any IT Recycling company.
